DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. M.U.T.-III data list

  • Refer to Data List Reference Table .

    1. Item 2: Engine revolution

Q. Is the check result normal?

Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions).
Go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Voltage measurement at crank angle sensor connector (SGT line).

(1)Disconnect the connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Ignition switch: ON
(3)Check the voltage between the crank angle sensor connector (SGT line) and body earth.
OK: 4.9 - 5.1 V

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 6.
Go to Step 3.

STEP 3. Voltage measurement at engine-ECU connector (SGT terminal).

(1)Disconnect engine-ECU harness, and connect special tool power plant ECU check harness (MB992291) to measure at connector for inspection.
(2)Disconnect crank angle sensor connector.
(3)Ignition switch: ON
(4)Check the voltage between the engine-ECU connector (SGT terminal) and body earth.
OK: 4.9 - 5.1 V

Q. Is the check result normal?

Repair SGT line between variable crank angle sensor connector and engine-ECU connector.
Go to Step 4.

STEP 4. Check of short to earth in SGT line between crank angle sensor connector and engine-ECU connector.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness.

STEP 5. M.U.T.-III data list

  • Refer to Data List Reference Table .

    1. Item 2: Crank angle sensor

Q. Is the check result normal?

Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions).
Replace the engine-ECU.

STEP 6. Voltage measurement at crank angle sensor connector (SGTB line).

(1)Use special tool test harness (MB991709) to connect connector, and measure at pick-up harness.
(2)Ignition switch: ON
(3)Check the voltage between the crank angle sensor connector (SGTB line) and body earth.
OK: 4.9 - 5.1 V

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 8.
Go to Step 7.

STEP 7. Check of open circuit, short to earth, and damage in SGTB line between crank angle sensor connector and engine-ECU connector.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness.

STEP 8. Resistance measurement at crank angle sensor connector (SGTG line)

(1)Disconnect the connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Measure the resistance between the crank angle sensor connector (SGTG line) and body earth.
OK: Continuity (2 Ω or less)

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 10.
Go to Step 9.

STEP 9. Check of open circuit and damage in SGTG line between engine-ECU connector crank angle sensor connector.

  • Check earthing line for open circuit and damage.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness.

STEP 10. Check of damage in SGT line between engine-ECU connector and crank angle sensor connector.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 11.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness.

STEP 11. Perform output wave pattern measurement at crank angle sensor connector (Using an oscilloscope).

(1)Use special tool test harness (MB991709) to connect connector, and measure at pick-up harness.
(2)Engine: Idling
(3)Transmission: Neutral
(4)Check the voltage between the crank angle sensor connector (SGT line) and body earth.
OK: Waveforms should be displayed on Inspection procedure using an oscilloscope (Refer to ), its maximum value should be 4.8 V or more, and its minimum valve should be 0.6 V or less with no noise in waveform.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.
Go to Step 12.

STEP 12. Check crank angle sensor for correct mounting condition.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 13.
Repair.

STEP 13. Replace the crank angle sensor.

  • After replacing the crank angle sensor, reconfirm whether the diagnosis code is set.

Q. Is the diagnosis code set?

Go to Step 14.
Check end.

STEP 14. Replace the crankshaft sensing ring.

  • After replacing the crank angle sensor, reconfirm whether the diagnosis code is set.

Q. Is the diagnosis code set?

Replace the engine-ECU.
