Code No. C2228
Steering angle sensor
OPERATION
The clearance warning control unit sets diagnosis code No. C2228 when it detects any steering
wheel sensor signal failure or the steering wheel sensor informs the ECU that an internal malfunction
has occurred or the neutral position has not been learned.
TROUBLE JUDGEMENT
Any of the conditions below is satisfied:
- The steering wheel sensor cannot recognise any steering wheel angle for at
least 1.5 seconds.
- The ECU receives the signal, which informs of an internal malfunction or incomplete
initialisation, from the steering wheel sensor.
PROBABLE CAUSES
- Malfunction of CAN bus
- The steering wheel sensor has not learned the neutral point of the steering wheel.
- Malfunction of steering wheel sensor (column switch assembly)
- Malfunction of clearance warning control unit
DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE
STEP 1. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics
Use the M.U.T.-III to diagnose the CAN bus lines.
Q.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 2.
Repair the CAN bus line (Refer to GROUP 54C - Troubleshooting 
).
STEP 2. Check the steering wheel sensor (column switch assembly) for
proper installation.

Go to Step 3.
Repair the steering wheel sensor (column switch assembly) (Refer to ).
STEP 3. M.U.T.-III data list.
Check the input signal (Refer to ).
- Vehicle stopped (the steering wheel is in the neutral position).

Replace the steering wheel sensor (column switch assembly) (Refer to ).
STEP 4. Check whether the diagnosis code is set again.
Check again if the diagnosis code is set in the clearance warning control unit.

(1)Erase the diagnosis code.
|
|
|
(2)Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position.

(3)Check if diagnosis code is set.

Replace the steering wheel sensor (column switch assembly) (Refer to )
and then go to Step 5.
The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How
to use Troubleshooting/inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction).
STEP 5. Check whether the diagnosis code is set again.
Check again if the diagnosis code is set in the clearance warning control unit.
