Inspection Procedure 4: The starter is impossible to operate <M/T>

PROBABLE CAUSES

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. Check battery voltage.

  • Measure battery voltage during cranking.
OK: 8 V or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 2.
Check battery (Refer to GROUP 54A - Battery - On-vehicle Service - Battery Test ).

STEP 2. M.U.T.-III data list.

  • Item 40: Starter switch
OK:
    ON (Ignition switch: ST)
    OFF (Ignition switch: ON)

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 3.
Go to Step 10.

STEP 3. Connector check: B-14X starter relay connector.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 4.
Repair or replace.

STEP 4. Check starter relay itself.

  • Check starter relay itself (Refer to GROUP 16 - Starting System - On-vehicle Service - Starter Relay Check ).

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.
Replace the starter relay.

STEP 5. Perform resistance measurement for open circuit at B-14X starter relay connector and body earth.

  • Remove starter relay
  • Resistance between terminal No.1 and earth
OK: Continuity (2 Ω or less)

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 6.
Check and repair the harness wire.

STEP 6. Perform voltage measurement at B-14X starter relay connector.

  • Disconnect connector, measure the harness side.
  • Voltage between terminal No. 5 and earth.
OK: System voltage

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 7.
Check intermediate connector A-05, and repair if necessary. If intermediate connector is normal, repair harness between battery and B-14X (terminal No.5) starter relay connector.

STEP 7. Connector check: B-117,B-118 starter connector.

Q. Are the check results normal?

Go to Step 8.
Repair or replace.

STEP 8. Perform voltage measurement at B-118 starter connector.

  • Disconnect connector, measure the harness side.
  • Voltage between terminal No. 1 and earth.
OK: System voltage

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 9.
Check and repair the harness wire.

STEP 9. Perform voltage measurement at B-117 starter connector.

  • Disconnect connector, measure the harness side.
  • Voltage between terminal No. 1 and earth.
  • Ignition switch: ST
OK: System voltage

Q. Is the check result normal?

Replace the starter.
Check intermediate connector B-20, and repair if necessary. If intermediate connector is normal, repair harness between B-14X (terminal No. 2) starter relay connector and B-117 (terminal No.1) starter connector.

STEP 10. Connector check: D-309 ignition switch connector.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 11.
Repair or replace.

STEP 11. Check ignition switch itself.

  • Check ignition switch itself (Refer to GROUP 54A - Ignition Switch - Inspection - Ignition Switch Inspection ).

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 12.
Replace the ignition switch.

STEP 12. Connector check: B-14X starter relay connector.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Check intermediate connector D-224, D-226 and repair if necessary. If intermediate connector is normal, repair harness between D-309 (terminal No, 5) ignition switch connector and B-14X (terminal No, 3) starter relay connector.
Repair or replace.
