Code No.33: Stop
lamp switch system
OPERATION
- The stop lamp switch turns ON when the brake pedal is depressed, and
turns
OFF when released.
- The ABS-ECU detects ON/OFF of the stop lamp switch based on the
voltage
change (ON: battery voltage, OFF: approx. 0 V), and determines if the brake
pedal is depressed
or not.
DIAGNOSIS CODE SET CONDITION
- When both the ABS and EBD are not controlled with the vehicle speed 15
km/h
or more, the stop lamp switch stays ON for 15 minutes or more.
- When the wiring harness of stop lamp switch input circuit is
open.
PROBABLE CAUSES
The most likely causes for these diagnosis codes
to set are:
- Malfunction of the stop lamp switch
- Incorrect adjustment of the stop lamp switch
- Damaged wiring harness and connector
- Malfunction of ABS-ECU

STEP 1. Operation check of stop lamp
(1)Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(2)Check the operation of the stop lamp when the brake pedal
is operated. OK:
Brake pedal depressed: ON
Brake pedal released: OFF

note |
Prior to the voltage inspection, check the stop
lamp switch connector D-134, multi-purpose
fuse No. 16, and intermediate connector D-241, and repair if
necessary.
(1)Disconnect the connector D-134.
(2)Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(3)Measure the voltage between terminal 2 and
earth. OK: System voltage
Q.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 6.
Repair
the wiring harness between the stop lamp switch connector D-134 terminal
No. 2 and the battery.
STEP 6. Voltage measurement at ABS-ECU connector D-250.
note |
Prior to the voltage inspection, check the ABS-ECU
connector D-250, stop lamp switch connector
D-134, junction connector D-113 (3200), and intermediate connector
D-230, and repair if necessary.
(1)Disconnect the connector D-250.
(2)Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(3)Measure the voltage between terminal 34 and
earth. OK: System voltage
Q.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 7.
Repair
the wiring harness between the stop lamp switch connector D-134 terminal
No. 1 and the ABS-ECU connector D-250 terminal No. 34.
STEP 7. Check whether the diagnosis code is reset.
Check again if the diagnosis code is
set.
(1)Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(2)Erase the diagnosis code.

position.
(4)Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(5)Check if the diagnosis code is reset.
(6)Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF)
position.
Replace the ABS-ECU.
It can
be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent. Refer to GROUP 00, How
