Inspection Procedure 5: Starting Impossible (Starter Operative But no Initial Combustion)




PROBABLE CAUSES




DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE


STEP 1. Check battery.



  • Check battery (Refer to GROUP 54A - Battery - On-vehicle Service - Battery Test).

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 2.
Replace the battery.

STEP 2. M.U.T.-III diagnosis code.


Q. Is the diagnosis code set?

Inspection chart for diagnosis code (Refer to ).
Go to Step 3.

STEP 3. Check timing chain for breakage.



  • Engine: Cranking
OK: Camshaft rotates

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 4.
Replace the timing chain.

STEP 4. Check the using fuel.



  • Check for foreign matters (water, petrol fuel, etc.) in fuel.

Q. Is the specified fuel being used?

Go to Step 5.
Replace the fuel.

STEP 5. Check glow system.



  • Check glow system (Refer to Inspection Procedure 22 ).

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 6.
Repair or replace the failed item.

STEP 6. Check fuel supply line.



  • Check for fuel leakage and clogging
  • Check fuel filter for clogging

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 7.
Repair.

STEP 7. M.U.T.-III actuator test.



  • Refer to Actuator Test Reference Table .

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 8.
Check suction control valve system (Refer to Code No. P0628 , Refer to Code No. P0629 ).

Q. Are the check results normal?

Go to Step 11.
Go to Step 9.

STEP 9. Replace the fuel pressure sensor.



  • After replacing the common-rail assembly, re-check the trouble symptoms.

Q. Does the trouble symptom persist?

Go to Step 10.
Check end.

STEP 10. Check the trouble symptoms.


Q. Does the trouble symptom persist?

Replace the supply pump assembly.
Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions).

STEP 11. Perform output wave pattern measurement at crank angle sensor and camshaft position sensor (Using an oscilloscope).


<Crank angle sensor>
  • Use the test harness (MB991709) to connect crank angle sensor connector, and measure at the pick-up harness.
  • Engine: Cranking
  • Transmission: Neutral
  • Voltage between terminal engine-ECU SGT line and body earth.
<Camshaft position sensor>
  • Use the test harness (MB991709) to connect camshaft position sensor connector, and measure at pick-up harness.
  • Engine: Cranking
  • Transmission: Neutral
  • Voltage between terminal engine-ECU SGC line and body earth.
OK: The timings on the output wave pattern at the both sensors should be the same as the specification in the inspection procedure using an oscilloscope (Refer to ).

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 18.
Go to Step 12.

STEP 12. Check crank angle sensor and camshaft position sensor for correct mounting condition.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 13.
Repair.

STEP 13. Check timing mark on the timing chain.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 14.
Align the timing marks on timing chain.

STEP 14. Check camshaft sensing portion.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 15.
Replace the inlet camshaft.

STEP 15. Replace the crank angle sensor.



  • After replacing the crank angle sensor, re-check the trouble symptoms.

Q. Does the trouble symptom persist?

Go to Step 16.
Check end.

STEP 16. Replace the camshaft position sensor.



  • After replacing the camshaft position sensor, re-check the trouble symptoms.

Q. Does the trouble symptom persist?

Go to Step 17.
Check end.

STEP 17. Replace the crankshaft sensing ring.



  • After replacing the crankshaft sensing ring, re-check the trouble symptoms.

Q. Does the trouble symptom persist?

Replace the engine-ECU.
Check end.

STEP 18. Check compression pressure.



  • Check compression pressure (Refer to GROUP 11G - On-vehicle Service - Compression Pressure Check ).

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 19.
Repair.

STEP 19. Check injector itself.



  • Check injector itself (Refer to ).

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 20.
Replace the injector at the failed cylinder.

STEP 20. Check the trouble symptoms.


Q. Does the trouble symptom persist?

Replace the engine-ECU.
