REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

caution
  • For vehicles with ABS, do not strike the rotors installed to the outboard joint outer race of driveshaft against other parts when removing or installing the driveshaft. Otherwise the rotors will be damaged.
  • For vehicles with ABS, be careful not to strike the pole piece at the tip of the front wheel speed sensor with tools during servicing work.
  • *: Indicates parts which should be temporarily tightened, and then fully tightened with the vehicle on the earth in the unladen condition.
  • When the suspension is adjusted or replaced, the calibration of steering wheel sensor must be performed (Refer to GROUP 35C, On-vehicle Service ). <Vehicles with ASTC>
Pre-removal Operation
  • Under Cover Removal (Refer to GROUP 51, Under Cover ).
  • Gear Oil Draining (Refer to ).
  • Stabilizer link assembly and stabilizer bar removal (Refer to GROUP 33, Stabilizer Bar ).

Post-installation Operation
  • Stabilizer link assembly and stabilizer bar installation (Refer to GROUP 33, Stabilizer Bar ).
  • Press the dust cover with a finger to check whether the dust cover is cracked or damaged.
  • Gear Oil Supplying (Refer to ).
  • Under Cover Installation (Refer to GROUP 51, Under Cover ).
  • Wheel Alignment Check and Adjustment (Refer to GROUP 33, On-vehicle Service ).
  • Wheel Speed Sensor Output Current Measurement (Refer to GROUP 35C, On-vehicle Service ).

REMOVAL SERVICE POINTS

<<A>> FRONT BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY REMOVAL

1.Remove the front brake caliper assembly with brake hose.
2.Secure the removed front brake caliper assembly with a wire or other similar material at a position where it will not interfere with the removal and installation of the hub assembly and knuckle.

<<B>> FRONT BRAKE DISC REMOVAL

If the front brake disc is seized, install a M8 × 1.25-mm bolts as shown, and remove the disc by tightening the bolts evenly and gradually.

<<C>> FRONT AXLE NUT REMOVAL

caution Do not apply pressure to wheel bearing by the vehicle weight to avoid possible damage when driveshaft nut is loosened.

Use special tool front hub and flange yoke holder (MB990767) to fix the hub and remove the front axle nut.

<<D>> TIE ROD END /LOWER ARM BALL JOINT /UPPER ARM BALL JOINT DISCONNECTION

caution
  • Do not remove the slotted nut from ball joint. Loosen it and use special tool to avoid possible damage to ball joint threads.
  • Hang special tool with a cord to prevent it from falling.
  • Because it is very dangerous when the ball joint comes off, raise the lower arm using a jack or similar device, making sure that the rebound stopper is free from any reaction force.
  • Hold the upper arm with a pipe to loosen the nut. If you fail to do this, the upper arm will jump out when its ball joint is separated from the knuckle.

1.Install special tool ball joint remover (MB992011) as shown in the figure.

2.Turn the bolt and knob as necessary to make the jaws of special tool parallel, tighten the bolt by hand and confirm that the jaws are still parallel.
note When adjusting the jaws in parallel, make sure the knob is in the position shown in the figure.
3.Tighten the bolt with a wrench to disconnect the tie rod end.

INSTALLATION SERVICE POINT

>>A<< SPLIT PIN INSTALLATION

Insert the split pin into the nut, and then secure it by bending.

>>B<<WASHER/FRONT AXLE NUT INSTALLATION

caution Before securely tightening the front axle nut, make sure there is no load on the wheel bearings. Otherwise the wheel bearings will be damaged.

1.Be sure to install the washer in the specified direction.
2.Using special tool front hub and flange yoke holder (MB990767), tighten the front axle nut to the specified torque. At this time, tighten the front axle nut to the specified torque in expectation of final tightening.
Tightening torque: 200 ± 10 N·m
3.If the pin hole do not align with the pins, tighten the front axle nut (less than 210 N·m) and find the nearest hole then bend the split pin to fit it.
