Code No. C2253: EPB SW malfunction

caution
  • If there is any problem in the CAN bus lines, an incorrect diagnosis code may be set. Prior to this diagnosis, diagnose the CAN bus lines (Refer to GROUP 54C - CAN Bus Diagnostics Table ).
  • Whenever ECU is replaced, ensure that the CAN bus lines are normal.

OPERATION

DIAGNOSIS CODE SET CONDITIONS

The diagnosis code will be set under any of the following conditions:

PROBABLE CAUSES

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. M.U.T.-III data list

Check the following data list (Refer to ).

  • Item No.2: EPB switch:LOCK 1 SW
  • Item No.3: EPB switch:LOCK 2 SW
  • Item No.4: EPB switch:RELEASE 1 SW
  • Item No.5: EPB switch:RELEASE 2 SW

Q. Is the check result normal?

The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
Go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Check the electric parking brake switch connector.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 3.
Repair the connector. Then go to Step 3.

STEP 3. Check of short to earth, and open circuit in LCK1, LCK2, REL1or REL2 line between electric parking brake ECU connector and electric parking brake switch connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 4.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to Step 1.

STEP 4. Measure the resistance at the electric parking brake switch connector.

(1)Check the electric parking brake switch connector.
(2)Disconnect the connector and measure at the wiring harness side.
(3)Measure the resistance between terminal No.1 and body earth.
OK: Continuity exists (2 Ω or less).

Q. Is the check result normal?

Replace the electric parking brake switch (Refer to ). Then go to Step 5.
The earth circuit may be open. Repair the wiring harness wires or connectors between the electric parking brake switch connector and the body earth. Then go to Step 5.

STEP 5. Measure the voltage at the electric parking brake switch connector.

(1)Check the electric parking brake switch connector.
(2)Disconnect the connector and measure at the wiring harness side.
(3)Ignition switch: ON
(4)Measure the voltage between the terminal No.3 and body earth.
OK: Approximately 4.3 V
(5)Measure the voltage between the terminal No.2, 9, 10 and body earth.
OK: Approximately battery voltage - 0.7 V

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 6.
Replace the electric parking brake ECU (Refer to ). Then go to Step 6.

STEP 6. Check whether the diagnosis code is set again.

Check again if the diagnosis code is set.
(1)Erase the diagnosis code.
(2)Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK (OFF) position.
(3)Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
(4)Check if the diagnosis code is set.

Q. Is diagnosis code No. C2253 set?

Replace the electric parking brake ECU (Refer to ).
The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
