GENERAL INFORMATION

OUTLINE OF CHANGES

Due to the change below, the service procedure has been added. The other service procedures are the same as before.

STEERING WHEEL <VEHICLES WITH HEATED STEERING WHEEL>

HEATED STEERING WHEEL SWITCH <VEHICLES WITH HEATED STEERING WHEEL>

The heated steering wheel switch is located on the centre switch panel.

SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION OF HEATED STEERING WHEEL

System configuration of heated steering wheel system

HOW TO CONTROL THE HEATED STEERING WHEEL

Operation power supply

When the ignition switch or engine switch is turned on, the heated steering wheel relay will be energised to enable the heated steering wheel.
Activation

When the heated steering wheel switch is pressed, its indicator will come on and the heated steering wheel will be activated.
Maintaining temperature

A thermistor in the heater element detects a surface temperature on the steering wheel. The heated steering wheel ECU receives this temperature signal to maintain the surface temperature at approximately 37°C*.
note * When the interior temperature is at 23°C.
Deactivation

When the heated steering wheel switch is pressed again during the heater operation, its indicator will go out and the heated steering wheel will be deactivated.
Timer

When approximately 30 minutes elapses after the activation, the heated steering wheel ECU will deenergise the heater element automatically to deactivate the heated steering wheel.

THE HEATED STEERING WHEEL FAILS

Malfunction detection

When the heated steering wheel ECU detects that the heater fails, it will deactivate the heated steering wheel.

What the heated steering wheel ECU detects
Item
Operation
Indicator illumination
Microcomputer fails
Resets the ECU and deactivates the heated steering wheel
OFF
Heated steering wheel fails
Overcurrent detected
Deactivates the heated steering wheel
OFF
Overheat detected
OFF
Power supply fails*
Low voltage detected
Deactivates the heated steering wheel
ON
Overvoltage detected
note
  • *: If the power supply fails (low voltage or overvoltage detected), the heater element will be deenergised. However, the indicator will not go out as the heated steering wheel ECU does not deactivate the system.
  • The heated steering wheel ECU does not support self-diagnosis and is not connected to the CAN. Therefore, the ECU does not set any diagnosis code.

SAFETY FEATURE OF HEATED STEERING WHEEL

Thermal cut-off

If the surface temperature reaches approximately 50°C due to a defective heated steering wheel ECU, etc., the heater element thermostat will deactivate the heated steering wheel until the temperature reduces to approximately 25°C.
