INSPECTION

  • Check the sleeve yoke, centre yoke and flange yoke for wear, damage or cracks.
  • Check the propeller shaft for bends, twisting or damage.
  • Check the universal joint for smooth operation in all directions.
  • Check the centre bearing for smooth movement.

PROPELLER SHAFT RUN-OUT

Limit:

    1.0 mm <2WD High Rider (4N1-M/T) or 4WD (4D5-A/T, 4N1)>
    0.5 mm <2WD High Rider (4N1-M/T) and 4WD (4D5-A/T, 4N1)>

PROPELLER SHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINT PLAY CHECK

1.Hold the tube of propeller shaft by one hand, and apply force by the other hand to the flange yoke or sleeve yoke in rotative direction, axial direction, and perpendicular direction for checking looseness.
2.If looseness is recognised, perform service work or replace the propeller shaft with a new one.

PROPELLER SHAFT UNIVERSAL GREASE CHECK

Perform grease-up with a grease gun, and check the grease ejected from the oil seal when grease-up is completed.
Judgement standard

  • If blackish grease is evenly ejected from the oil seal periphery, it is normal.
  • If non-discoloured grease is ejected from the specific area (partially), the grease amount is insufficient and the oil seal is worn. Perform service work or replace the propeller shaft with a new one.
  • If the white cloudy grease is ejected, water has been mixed in grease. Replace the propeller shaft with a new one.

FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT GREASE CHECK <4WD (4D5-A/T, 4N1)>

caution If the front propeller shaft is immersed in water such as during wading, top up the grease immediately.

1.Remove the nuts and bolts securing the front propeller shaft to the front differential.

2.Compress the propeller shaft in axial direction.
note If you top up the grease without compressing the propeller shaft, excessive grease will ooze out during driving. This may cause misdiagnosis of grease leakage.

3.Fill the grease at the nipple when the front propeller shaft is compressed.
Specified grease: NKG607
Specified value: As required

4.Check whether the old grease oozes out from the seal or the centre of the yoke at the rear side.
5.Wipe off the excessive grease.

6.Extend the front propeller shaft to its original length, and then tighten the front differential mounting nuts and bolts.
Tightening torque: 54 ± 5 N·m
