REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

caution
  • Before removing the steering wheel, driver’s air bag module assembly and knee air bag module refer to GROUP 52B - Service Precautions , Driver’s Air Bag Module and Clock Spring and Knee Air Bag Module <Vehicles with knee air bag>.
  • After the installation, perform a calibration for the ASTC-ECU to learn the steering wheel sensor neutral point. (Refer to GROUP 35C - On-vehicle Service, Calibration ) <Vehicles with ASTC>.
  • Do not reuse the part that has been dropped because its internal components may be defective even if it has no apparent damage.
  • Always keep the steering column assembly and steering shaft assembly away from the matter that generates magnetic force.
  • For the steering column assembly and steering shaft assembly, parts cannot be disassembled.
  • Be careful when removing and installing the steering column assembly and steering shaft assembly, because it is heavy.
Pre-removal and Post-installation Operation

INSTALLATION SERVICE POINT

>>A<< STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY, BOLT (STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY AND POWER STEERING GEAR BOX ASSEMBLY) INSTALLATION

1.Assemble the steering shaft to the vehicle body as shown.
(1) Engage the hole on bracket B with the projection of the bush to install bracket B.
(2) Hook the tab of bracket B into the opening on the steering column support bracket <2WD (Except high rider)> or the bracket welded on the spring house <2WD (High rider) and 4WD>. The projection on the bush should be aligned with its corresponding bracket.
(3) Hook the opposite tab of bracket B into the opening on bracket A.
(4) Tighten the bolt to secure the bush.
Tightening torque: 13 ± 2 N·m

2.Align the slit on the steering shaft assembly with the emboss on the power steering gear box assembly.

3.Insert the steering column bolt into the non-threaded bolt hole, and tighten it to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 32 ± 3 N·m

>>B<< STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION

caution
  • When reusing the steering column, do not release the tilt lever until the steering column shaft has been installed. Confirm that tilt position is uppermost position.
  • When the steering column is replaced, do not release the tilt lever until it has been installed.
  • When installing the steering column, do not leave it fixed temporarily at only one point and make sure the column shaft is not shaken strongly. If you fail to do, the collision absorbing mechanism at the column shaft mounting location may be damaged.

note Connect the steering column assembly to the steering shaft so that the portion (between the missing teeth) of the steering shaft should be within the oblong portion at the yoke of the steering column assembly.
1.Ensure that the tilt lever is in the lock position, and install the steering column.

2.Tighten the bolts in the following order:
(1) Tighten bolt (A) by hand.
(2) Tighten bolt (B) by hand.
(3) Tighten bolt (C) to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 21 ± 3 N·m
(4) Tighten bolt (B) to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 21 ± 3 N·m
(5) Tighten bolt (A) to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 42 ± 8 N·m
